OUR MISSION

Afya aims to provide an environmentally responsible solution to the dire shortage of healthcare supplies in underserved communities globally. Afya collects and delivers critically needed surplus medical supplies, hospital equipment, and humanitarian provisions for acute and ongoing health crises worldwide.

Afya recovers surplus medical supplies and equipment from healthcare centers. Each year, American hospitals discard 7,000 tons of usable medical supplies. Since 2008, Afya has recovered $26 million worth of these critical supplies.

Each year, hundreds of volunteers donate a combined 20,000 hours of service to sort, inventory and pack our recovered medical supplies. This process allows us to maintain a detailed database of our inventory so we can tailor our shipments to our partner’s needs.

Afya has worked with public health partners in 56 countries in Africa, Asia, Latin America and the Caribbean. We work with healthcare professionals to ascertain the specific needs of each mission and ship custom containers, pallets or duffel bags.

Afya at UCLA is an entirely student-run extension of this foundation. In our first year as a brand new group to UCLA in Fall 2014, our aim was to establish a presence on campus as well as throughout the Los Angeles area. Now, four years later, Afya has teamed up with Medical Aid Initative, another incredible campus organization that has a warehouse in LA for hospital donations. We work to personally strengthen our network through reaching out to hospitals, nursing homes, and private medical practices for excess supplies we can use to send overseas. We also strive to involve the UCLA students and faculty directly by hosting various drives for supplies such as pens and linens.
